Celebration of the Arts Books & Authors Night

Thomas King, Emma Donoghue and Giles Blunt with interviewer Ted Barris.

Uxbridge Music Hall

For more than 30 years Blue Heron Books has been hosting the Celebration of the Arts Books and Authors Night and bringing top-notch literary talent to Uxbridge!

This year’s program features three fabulous authors in an interesting and diverse program to satisfy every reader.

Emma Donoghue is a novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. Room sold almost three million copies, won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker and Orange Prizes. Donoghue scripted the Canadian-Irish film adaptation, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Thomas King is an award-winning writer and photographer. His critically acclaimed, bestselling books include Medicine River; Green Grass, Running Water; One Good Story, That One; Truth and Bright Water; A Short History of Indians in Canada; The Back of the Turtle (winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction); The Inconvenient Indian (winner of the RBC Taylor Prize); Indians on Vacation; Sufferance; and the poetry collection 77 Fragments of a Familiar Ruin. A Companion of the Order of Canada and the recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award, Thomas King lives in Guelph, Ontario.

Giles Blunt grew up in North Bay, Ontario, before studying English Literature at the University of Toronto. The author of twelve novels, including the award-winning John Cardinal Mystery series, Blunt has more recently turned to literary fiction with Bad Juliet. He lives in Toronto.

Ted Barris: For as long as there’ve been Books & Authors nights in Uxbridge, Ted Barris has served as MC. In part, that’s because he makes his living writing and interviewing. As a journalist/broadcaster for 50 years, he’s been published by most major news outlets in Canada and appeared regularly on CBC and TVO. He’s the author of 22 bestselling books. His histories have received numerous awards: The Great Escape – 2014 Libris Nonfiction Book of the Year; Dam Busters – 2018 NORAD Trophy; Rush to Danger – longlisted for 2020 Charles Taylor Prize for Nonfiction. Last fall, his latest book Battle of Britain was both a Toronto Star and Globe & Mail bestseller; also in 2024 Ted was appointed to the Order of Canada.

The Bomb - Retro '80's Live Experience

The Bomb - A Retro '80's Live Experience (www.thebomblive.com)

The Bomb's touring Retro '80s Live concert experience is a show like no other! A touring Canadian tribute act, The Bomb embraces the wonderful decade of the '80s, playing all of your favourite New Wave and atmospheric dance and radio hits from that wonderful musical era, (rather than playing tribute to just one band).

The Bomb Retro '80s Live Experience is literally 'The Soundtrack of your youth, Live’

When you attend a concert featuring The Bomb Retro '80s Live, the lads are guaranteed to play all of the huge hits you would hear on ever-popular '80s nights on big city radio stations, authentically performing your favourite musical anthems by Bowie, Tears For Fears, The Cars, Duran Duran, A-ha, Depeche Mode, Hall & Oates, The Cure, Simple Minds, Prince, The Clash & so much more.

Imagine if one group recorded all your favorite '80s hits, and now you can go see them LIVE!

The performers in The Bomb take pride in their big sound, exuberant performance and image, always dressing for their role & putting on a show full of energy and atmosphere. In addition to producing and playing hundreds of their own shows, the lads are honoured to have warmed up Ontario stages as an opening act for The Spoons, Men Without Hats, Big Wreck and Carol Pope & Rough Trade as well as Images in Vogue!

Although this is a theatre style show, dancing and singing along is happily encouraged! A meet and greet will follow the show for anyone wishing to meet the performers, grab a T-Shirt or grab a quick picture with the lads!

All tickets are: $45.00 and include all taxes, ticket fees and Music Hall Improvement Fund.

No refunds or exchanges once tickets have been purchased.

Blue Heron Book Presents

The Book Drunkard Literary Festival

Mona Awad Book Launch

at The Second Wedge Brewing Co.

Join us at The Second Wedge Brewing Co. (14 Victoria Street, Uxbridge) on October 7th at 7 p.m. for an evening with bestselling author Mona Awad, as she discusses her newest release, We Love You, Bunny.

We Love You, Bunny is the highly anticipated follow up to the viral sensation Bunny, a brilliantly written, laugh-out-loud funny, dark, and delirious novel set in the Bunny-verse—a world that Margaret Atwood declared “soooo genius.” In the cult classic novel Bunny, Samatha Heather Mackey, a lonely outsider student at a highly selective MFA program in New England, was first ostracized and then seduced by a clique of creepy-sweet rich girls who call themselves “Bunny.” An invitation to the Bunnies’ Smut Salon leads Samantha down a dark rabbit hole (pun intended) into the violently surreal world of their off-campus workshops where monstrous creations are conjured with deadly and wondrous consequences.

When We Love You, Bunny opens, Sam has just published her first novel to critical acclaim. But at a New England stop on her book tour, her one-time frenemies, furious at the way they’ve been portrayed, kidnap her. Now a captive audience, it’s her (and our) turn to hear the Bunnies’ side of the story. One by one, they take turns holding the axe, and recount the birth throes of their unholy alliance, their discovery of their unusual creative powers—and the phantasmagoric adventure of conjuring their first creation. With a bound and gagged Sam, we embark on a wickedly intoxicating journey into the heart of dark academia: a fairy tale slasher that explores the wonder and horror of creation itself. Not to mention the transformative powers of love and friendship, Bunny.

Frankenstein by way of Heathers, We Love You, Bunny is both a prequel and a sequel, and an unabashedly wild and totally complete stand-alone novel. Open your hearts, Bunny, to another dazzlingly original and darkly hilarious romp in the Bunny-verse from the queen of the fever-dream, Mona Awad.

The Book Drunkard Literary Festival

An Evening With Giller Prize Winners Linden MacIntyre & Souvankham Thammavongsa

at Wooden Sticks Golf Club

Join us on October 8 th at 7 p.m. at Wooden Sticks Golf Club (40 Elgin Park Dr, Uxbridge) for coffee and dessert as we enjoy an evening with powerful Canadian writers and Giller Prize Winners Souvankham Thammavongsa & Linden MacIntyre being interviewed by Stephen Brunt in discussion of their newest books, Pick A Colour and An Accidental Villain.

From Giller Prize and O. Henry Award winner Souvankham Thammavongsa comes a revelatory novel about loneliness, love, labour, and class. An intimate and sharply written book following a nail salon owner as she toils away for the privileged clients who don't even know her true name. Told over a single day, with razor-sharp precision and wit, Pick a Colour confirms Souvankham Thammavongsa's place as literature's premier chronicler of the immigrant experience, in its myriad, complex, and slyly subversive forms.

From the bestselling, prize-winning author Linden MacIntyre comes an engrossing, page-turning exploration of the little-known life of Sir Hugh Tudor. Appointed by his friend Winston Churchill to lead the police in Ireland during the Irish War of Independence, Tudor met civil strife and domestic terrorism with indiscriminate state-sanctioned murder—changing the course of Irish history. Linden MacIntyre has spent four years tracking Tudor through archives, contemporaries’ diaries and letters, and the body count of that Irish war.

In An Accidental Villain, he delivers a consequential and fascinating account of how events can bring a man to the point where he acts against his own training, principles and inclination in the service of a cause—and ends up on a long journey toward personal oblivion.

Stephen Brunt is an award-winning writer and broadcaster for Sportsnet, and the co-host of The FAN 590’s Writers Bloc with Jeff Blair and Richard Deitsch. He is the author of the #1 national bestselling Searching for Bobby Orr and All the Way, with Jordin Tootoo.

Your $65 ticket includes coffee/tea and dessert, plus a $30 voucher towards one of the featured titles.

The Book Drunkard Literary Festival

An Evening with Antonio Michael Downing & Ian Williams

at Wooden Sticks Golf Club

Join us on October 9 th at 7 pm at Wooden Sticks Golf Club (40 Elgin Park Dr, Uxbridge) as we enjoy an evening with Canadian authors Antonio Michael Downing and Ian Williams, interviewed by Elamin Abdelmahmoud in discussion of their much-anticipated new novels Black Cherokeeand You’ve Changed.

Queenie meets Frying Plantain in Black Cherokee - a courageous coming-of-age story by Antonio Michael Downing, set in the 1990s, about a mixed-race Black girl fighting for recognition in a South Carolina Cherokee community that refuses to accept her ancestry as legitimate. With dazzling language, keen insight, and an unforgettable voice, Black Cherokee is not only an astonishing novel but a profound meditation on race, identity, and coming of age from a major literary talent.

The eagerly awaited follow-up novel from the Giller prize-winning author Ian Williams, You’ve Changed is a daring and clever dissection of a crumbling marriage between two people who are morphing in ways that confound each other. Sharp, inventive and absurdly funny, You’ve Changed is a wild ride exploring identity, insecurity, intimacy and desire, and who individuals become when they unite, and how they change despite promising not to.

Elamin Abdelmahmoud is the host of CBC Radio’s daily arts, pop culture and entertainment show COMMOTION, and a former writer for BuzzFeed News. His work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Maclean's, Rolling Stone and others. Elamin is the author of Son of Elsewhere: A Memoir in Pieces, a number one national bestseller, a Globe 100 book, and a New York Times notable book.

Lucy E.M. Black Book Launch

at The Blue Heron Studio

Join us in the Blue Heron Studio as we celebrate the launch of A Quilting of Scars - the newest novel from local author Lucy E.M. Black.

Filled with the pleasure of recognizable yet distinctively original characters and a deftly drawn sense of time and place, A Quilting of Scarsbrings to life a story of for- bidden love, abuse and murder. Pulsing with repressed sexuality and guilt, Larkin Beattie reveals the many secrets he has kept hidden throughout his lonely life. The character-driven narrative is a meditation on aging and remorse, offering a rich account of the strictures and rhythms of farming in the not-so-distant past, highlighting the confines of a community where strict moral codes are imposed upon its members and fear of exposure terrifies queer youth. As Larkin reflects upon key events, his recollections include his anger at the hypocrisy of the church, and the deep grief and loneliness that have marked his path. There is a timelessness to this story which transcends the period and resonates with heartbreaking relevance.

Author of The Marzipan Fruit Basket, Eleanor Courtown, Stella’s Carpet, The Brickworks, and Class Lessons: Stories of Vulnerable Youth, Lucy E.M. Black’s short stories have been published in Britain, Ireland, USA and Canada in a variety of literary journals and magazines. She lives in Port Perry, Ontario, the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, First Nations.

This event is free to attend. The book will be available to purchase.

An Evening with Alan Doyle

at the Uxbridge Music Hall

Join us on November 4 th at 7 p.m. as musician, actor, author and beloved Newfoundlander, Alan Doyle will be interviewed by Terry Fallis at Uxbridge Music Hall (16 Main St S, Uxbridge) in discussion of Doyle's insider guide, The Smiling Land.

Few Canadian musicians are as synonymous with their home province as Alan Doyle is to his—and even fewer once worked as tour guides. In The Smiling Land, Alan reprises his tour- guiding role to welcome the rest of Canada to his home and take readers on an adventure: a freewheeling road trip through Newfoundland, its history, and its culture. From Fogo Island to the Southwest Coast, Labrador to Ferryland, and everywhere in between, Alan's Newfoundland awaits you. Wildly entertaining, informative, and brimming with Alan's classic brand of storytelling and romping good fun, The Smiling Land is a celebration of Newfoundland—both its storied past and its ever-vibrant present.

Terry Fallis grew up in Toronto and earned an engineering degree from McMaster University. Drawn to politics at an early age, he worked for cabinet ministers in Ottawa and at Queen’s Park. His first novel, The Best Laid Plans, began as a podcast, then was self-published, won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, was re-published by McClelland & Stewart to great reviews, was crowned the 2011 winner of CBC’s Canada Reads as “the essential Canadian novel of the decade,” and was adapted as a CBC Television series and a stage musical. His next two novels, The High Road and Up and Down were finalists for the Leacock Medal, and in 2015, he won the prize a second time, for his fourth book, No Relation. His other novels include Poles Apart, One Brother Shy, Albatross, and Operation Angus, and were all national bestsellers.

Your $60 ticket includes a signed copy of The Smiling Land.

Romance Books & Brunch

at Wooden Sticks Golf Club

Join us at Wooden Sticks Golf Club (40 Elgin Park Dr, Uxbridge) on November 9th at 11 a.m. for a Books & Brunch event perfect for the romance reader! We’re excited to welcome three talented experts in the genre – delivering all the tropes you love! Join Rebecca Fisseha, Ellie K. Wilde, and Kristine Winters (Karma Brown) for an exhilarating discussion of their latest novels serving up sugar and spice: Only Because It’s YouOnly Between Us, and The Christmas Cure.

Rebecca Fisseha is an Ethiopian-Canadian writer based in Toronto. She is the author of the novel Daughters of Silence, as well as short stories, creative non-fiction, and personal essays that appear in various publications, including the anthology Addis Ababa Noir and Tongues: On Longing and Belonging Through Language. In her 2025 novel Only Because It’s You, we explore the marriage of convenience trope and are delightfully reminded that sometimes you need to take a leap of faith to land exactly where you're meant to be...

Ellie K. Wilde dreams up love stories with a lot of heart and the kind of spice that makes your knees shake. In her highly anticipated sequel, Only in Your Dreams is a steamy, whip-smart sports romance about a former pro football star who agrees to fake date the fan-favorite ex of another high-profile NFL player so they can both save what’s most dear to them while fighting their growing feelings for each other.

Kristine Winters is the pen name of Karma Brown, author of six novels including the #1 national bestseller Recipe for a Perfect Wife. She’s also one half of the writing duo behind The Holiday Swap and All I Want for Christmas by Maggie Knox. The Christmas Cure is a cozy holiday rom-com in which ER physician Dr. Libby Munro travels back in time to the previous Christmas during her hometown’s rumored-to-be-magical Christmas tree lighting ceremony, where she must confront her past choices—while navigating an unexpected romance that could rewrite her future.

Your $60 ticket to this event includes brunch and a $30 voucher for one of the featured novels.
