In 1873, Ira G. Crosby embarked on a remarkable journey, purchasing a prime lot at the intersection of First Avenue and Dominion Street from Joseph Gould. On this plot, he commissioned the construction of a striking yellow brick residence, destined to become a cherished abode for his family. Legend has it that the very bricks adorning this elegant home were sourced from the nearby Gould Brick Yard, adding a touch of local history to its walls.
Over the decades, the residence exchanged hands, each owner leaving their mark on its storied legacy. In 1900, the baton passed to the Goodrich family, who nurtured the house until 1929 when it found a new custodian in Charlotte Smith. Notably, in 1944, Major James Wood, instrumental in securing the Uxbridge Coat of Arms, became the proud owner, infusing the home with a sense of civic pride and heritage.

In 1955, the residence welcomed Duncan and Dorothy McPherson, with Duncan’s reputation as one of Canada’s finest cartoonists adding a creative flair to its ambiance. However, the lure of Toronto beckoned the couple in 1959, prompting a change in ownership as Alex and Ema Williamson stepped into its halls.
As seen from Dominion St.
Alex’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident in his acquisition of the Imperial Oil station at the corner of Brock Street East and Main Street in 1947, where he established a thriving Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership. Eventually, the Williamsons expanded their enterprise, necessitating a move to a new location, yet their connection to the storied Crosby Residence remained a cherished chapter in the annals of Uxbridge’s history.

Discover the captivating history of the Samuel Umphrey Residence, a true architectural treasure in Uxbridge. Built in 1871 by Samuel and Elizabeth Umphrey, this striking Victorian Gothic home stands as a reminder of both the artistry and ambition of its time.
From the moment you see it, the house leaves a lasting impression with its charming decorative details. The delicate frieze on the verandah and the ornate bargeboard on the gable ends are classic features of the era, offering a glimpse into the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of the late 19th century.
But the story of this home is more than just its beauty—it’s also about the people who lived within its walls. Samuel Umphrey, alongside his brother-in-law R. P. Harman, made a lasting impact on Uxbridge’s business community. The two entrepreneurs purchased a planing mill and sash/door factory on Bascom Street, further cementing their presence in the town’s industrial and commercial growth.
Samuel’s career began as a merchant in Udora, but he transitioned seamlessly into Uxbridge’s growing manufacturing sector. By 1873, he had taken on a leadership role as a director at the Uxbridge Cabinet Organ Company. His dedication and vision saw him rise through the ranks, eventually serving as president and manager of the company. Under his guidance, the business evolved into the Uxbridge Piano and Organ Company by the late 1880s, adapting to the changing musical and economic landscape of the time.
The Samuel Umphrey House is more than just a home—it is a symbol of Uxbridge’s entrepreneurial spirit, its architectural heritage, and the individuals whose vision helped shape the community. Its Gothic elegance, paired with the remarkable story of Samuel Umphrey, ensures that this residence continues to hold an important place in Uxbridge’s history.

The Methodist Parsonage: A Historic Home at 49 Second Avenue, Uxbridge
At the corner of Second Avenue and Dominion Street stands a house with deep roots in Uxbridge’s history—the Methodist Parsonage, now recognized as part of the United Church. More than just a residence, this home has long symbolized faith, fellowship, and the strength of community ties.
This photo taken in 2025 shows the house as seen from the corner of Dominion Street and Second Avenue.
A Beginning in 1878
In 1878, the trustees of the Methodist Parsonage acquired the property from Joseph Gould, a key figure in Uxbridge’s early development. They commissioned the construction of a red brick home, designed with both elegance and purpose. Its striking six gothic-style windows and a sweeping verandah gave it a sense of grandeur, fitting for a home connected to the spiritual and social life of the town.

This photo taken in 2022 shows the house as seen from the corner of Dominion Street and Second Avenue.
Changes Through the Years
Like many historic homes, the Methodist Parsonage has evolved over time. The once expansive verandah was reduced in size, and the rich red brick exterior was eventually painted yellow and now white. Decorative features that once highlighted its Victorian charm—such as gingerbread trim, roof finials, shutters, and tall chimneys—were removed. Yet despite these changes, the home has retained its historic character and continues to reflect the spirit of its era.

A House of Resilience and Community
The Methodist Parsonage has seen many seasons of life—welcoming families, hosting gatherings, and standing quietly through times of both celebration and sorrow. While the details of its architecture have shifted, its role as a symbol of resilience and fellowship remains strong. It embodies the values of the Methodist and later United Church community: connection, service, and shared history.

A Living Reminder
Today, 49 Second Avenue still carries the charm of its past. Though altered, the home’s essence endures, offering a reminder of the people who lived within its walls and the community it served. It stands not just as a historic house, but as a living reminder of Uxbridge’s heritage, bridging the gap between the town’s past and present.

The above photo shows Brock Street West (North Side) as it appears today. In this photo we see the Bowling Alley and Arcade on the second floor of the building on the left with the lower level home to the Preston Gallery, Coldwell Banker R.M.R. Real Estate, Uxbridge Community Cleaning and JB Variety Store. The building in the middle is the Post Office.
The photo below taken in 1914 shows the Post Office (still under construction). The clock tower was later taken down and replaced with a taller one (see next photo). Beside the Post Office is a liquor store and a Massey-Harris Farm Implement store.
The photo below taken during the 1968 Santa Claus Parade shows the post office with the taller clock tower. After the new post office was opened in 1969 the town purchased the old post office from the government. However, later with appeals from the community the town sold the post office along with two other municipal properties and in 1971 they were demolished to make room for the building we see in the top photo.
Captured during the December 1961 Santa Claus parade, the photo below shows two houses in the background, which were later replaced by the Post Office. Wixan’s Bridge and a parking lot now occupy the space where the billboard once stood.
In the image above, you can see the Michael O’Neil home on the right, with his blacksmith shop situated on the left.
In this vintage photograph from the early 1900s, the Uxbridge Bank is seen transitioning along Brock St. In the background, we catch a glimpse of the house owned by Michael O’Neil. Today, this corner is occupied by the CIBC bank.
