Samuel Umphrey Residence

Samuel Umphrey Residence

(c. 1871)

Discover the captivating history of the Samuel Umphrey Residence, a Victorian Gothic marvel erected in 1871 by Samuel and Elizabeth Umphrey. With its charming decorative touches like the frieze on the verandah and the ornate bargeboard on the gable ends, this house leaves a lasting impression.

Teaming up with his brother-in-law R. P. Harman, Mr. Umphrey ventured into the business world, acquiring a planing mill and sash/door factory on Bascom Street. Previously a merchant in Udora, he transitioned smoothly into the role of director at the Uxbridge Cabinet Organ Company in 1873. Over the years, he rose to become its president and manager, leading the company through its transformation into the Uxbridge Piano and Organ Company by the late 1880s.

The Methodist Parsonage

The Methodist Parsonage

The Methodist Parsonage – Present Day

This photo taken in 2022 shows the house as seen from the corner of Dominion Street and Second Avenue. Below the house is viewed from Dominion Street.

History of The Methodist Parsonage

Located at the intersection of Second Avenue and Dominion Street, the Methodist Parsonage, now known as the United Church, stands as a silent witness to history. In 1878, the trustees of the Methodist Parsonage acquired the property from Joseph Gould and commissioned the construction of a red brick house, adorned with six gothic-style windows and a spacious verandah.

Over the years, the house underwent subtle alterations. The verandah’s grandeur was reduced, and the once vibrant red bricks were painted yellow. Decorative gingerbread, roof finials, shutters, and chimneys were removed, yet the essence of the house remained unchanged—a symbol of resilience and community.

Today, the Methodist Parsonage retains its allure, embodying the enduring spirit of generations past. Though its physical appearance has evolved, its significance as a symbol of faith and fellowship endures. It serves as a reminder of the individuals and families who have called it home, and the moments of joy and sorrow it has witnessed over the years.

The above photo courtesy of Uxbridge – Scugog Historic Homes and Heritage Buildings by Paul Arculus and J. Peter Hvidsten was taken from Joseph Gould’s photo album and shows what the Methodist Parsonage looked like in 1899.

Brock Street West Uxbridge, looking north

The above photo shows Brock Street West (North Side) as it appears today.  In this photo we see the Bowling Alley and Arcade on the second floor of the building on the left with the lower level home to the Preston Gallery, Coldwell Banker R.M.R. Real Estate, Uxbridge Community Cleaning and JB Variety Store.  The building in the middle is the Post Office.

The photo below taken in 1914 shows the Post Office (still under construction).  The clock tower was later taken down and replaced with a taller one (see next photo).  Beside the Post Office is a liquor store and a Massey-Harris Farm Implement store.

Brock Street West Uxbridge

The photo below taken during the 1968 Santa Claus Parade shows the post office with the taller clock tower.  After the new post office was opened in 1969 the town purchased the old post office from the government.  However, later with appeals from the community the town sold the post office along with two other municipal properties and in 1971 they were demolished to make room for the building we see in the top photo.

Captured during the December 1961 Santa Claus parade, the photo below shows two houses in the background, which were later replaced by the Post Office. Wixan’s Bridge and a parking lot now occupy the space where the billboard once stood.

In the image above, you can see the Michael O’Neil home on the right, with his blacksmith shop situated on the left.

In this vintage photograph from the early 1900s, the Uxbridge Bank is seen transitioning along Brock St. In the background, we catch a glimpse of the house owned by Michael O’Neil. Today, this corner is occupied by the CIBC bank.

Brock Street East (South Side)

Brock Street East (South Side)

Take a journey through time as we explore the historic stretch of Brock Street East, captured in two distinct eras: 1970 and the vibrant summer of 2022.

The image above provides a window into the past, offering a glimpse of the bustling storefronts lining the south side of Brock Street, just west of Bascom Street, in 1970. Canadian Tire proudly anchors the scene on the left, flanked by Davie Rexall Drug Store and the newly reconstructed Moore’s Pro Hardware Store, standing tall after emerging from the ashes of a devastating fire (as depicted in the photo below). Between these establishments, the vacant space once housed Uxbridge Cleaners and Dyers, while Len’s Convenience Store and Dyson’s Meat Market complete the ensemble on the right side of the frame.

Now, direct your attention to the photo below, capturing the same block of stores bathed in the summertime glow of 2022.

On the left, you’ll find Getaway Travel, Uxbridge Tailoring, and The Lemonade Stand, Cycle Solutions and Mondo Hair Salon, while on the right side, Royal Lepage Frank Real Estate and Col. McGradys Pub & Grill anchor the evolving streetscape. The once-central building has made room for progress, making space for a new culvert beneath Brock Street.

In March 1969, a fierce blaze engulfed Moore’s Hardware store, as captured in the photo below. Thanks to the swift and brave efforts of the fire department, the surrounding buildings were spared, preserving the community’s essence.

As we close this chapter of Brock Street’s story, let’s carry forward the lessons of resilience and community unity it has taught us. As the street continues to evolve, let us remember its rich history and the people who have shaped it. Together, may we embrace the changes ahead with open hearts and a steadfast commitment to preserving the essence of our beloved thoroughfare. Here’s to the next chapter of Brock Street, where the past meets the future, and the spirit of community endures.

The Thomas Foster Memorial

The Thomas Foster Memorial

The Thomas Foster Memorial

In the heart of the tranquil Uxbridge countryside we find The Thomas Foster Memorial, standing proudly as a testament to the remarkable achievements of a local legend, it offers a glimpse into a world where triumph, legacy, and artistic grandeur converge.

Thomas Foster, a quintessential local boy born on July 24, 1852 eventually ventured to the bustling city and found his fortune, rose to prominence as both a Member of Parliament and Mayor of Toronto. His legacy, woven into the fabric of his community, left an indelible mark that continues to resonate to this day. It’s fitting that a man of such stature would be commemorated in a manner befitting his legacy—a memorial unlike any other, nestled amidst the serene beauty of rural Uxbridge.

The Thomas Foster Memorial

Craftsmanship of the Foster

Inspired by the iconic Taj Mahal and infused with elements of Byzantine architecture, the memorial stands as a fusion of cultural influences, a masterpiece crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Solid bronze doors beckon visitors into a realm of unparalleled beauty, where hand-painted and fired stained glass windows cast kaleidoscopic hues across the interior. Beneath their gaze, the floors come alive with richly coloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, each intricately wrought with symbolic designs by some of the finest artisans of the time.

The Thomas Foster Memorial

The dedication ceremony of the Memorial, held on a Sunday morning in October 1936, marked the culmination of years of dedication and meticulous craftsmanship. Situated atop a gentle hill, the memorial commands attention from all angles, its unique design drawing the eye and stirring the soul. Its position, strategically placed five to six kilometres north of Uxbridge, ensures that it is easily visible from all directions, a beacon of beauty in the tranquil countryside.

Thomas Foster’s vision for the memorial was ambitious yet deeply rooted in a desire to honour his loved ones and serve his community. Seeking to emulate the grandeur of the Taj Mahal, he envisioned a structure that would provide a dignified resting place for himself, his wife, and his daughter Ruby, while also offering a sanctuary for communal burials. A removable slab in the floor allowed for coffins to be lowered into crypts below.

Yet, as with any ambitious endeavour, challenges arose. What began as a $100,000 project ultimately doubled in cost by its completion, a testament to Foster’s unwavering commitment to his vision. The project spanned three seasons, with the cornerstone laid in the fall of 1935 amidst ceremony and reverence.

The Foster Today

Today, the Thomas Foster Memorial serves as a venue for various events, including concerts, weddings, and memorials. “Fridays at the Foster” is a recurring event held every Friday evening from June to September, featuring musical performances in the building’s acoustically-rich environment. Admission is by donation at the door.

Hours of Operation

The memorial is open for exploration from Wednesday to Sunday during July and August and guided tours can be arranged during May, June, and September.

The Thomas Foster Memorial stands not only as a symbol of love and remembrance but also as a testament to architectural beauty and artistic craftsmanship. It invites visitors to reflect on its history and the enduring legacy of Thomas Foster and his family.
